Published August 20, 2026 · 462 pages · Paperback, hardcover, Kindle

About the book

It begins on the boards of the harbor at Hakata, in the spring of 1484.

A man kneels on wet boards. Another takes his swords, one and then the other, and reads out the sentence that strips his name. No one raises a voice. The whole of it takes the time needed to read three lines aloud. By evening he is aboard a ship with the coast diminishing behind him. The name they took was Haruto Takashi. The lord who took it, Hosokawa Masakata, keeps his wife and his son.

What follows is six years and half a world. Other coasts, other languages, other men's ships. He makes himself useful to people who never ask where he came from. He is in no hurry, and the men who work beside him learn not to ask why.

None of it is what he is actually doing.

Behind him, inside a compound he cannot enter, a boy is growing up. A woman is keeping count.

A novel of exile, inheritance, and the long patience of revenge, moving from the pine coasts of Japan to the olive country of the Maghreb and the monsoon lanes of the Indian Ocean. Onaji Sora asks what Haruto owes the family he could not protect, and what is left of the man they sent away.

Onaji Sora is the sequel to The Chronos of Andalucia. It can be read on its own.

Reading group guide

  1. The sentence that strips Haruto of his name takes the time needed to read three lines aloud. What does the novel suggest about how quickly a life can be undone, and how slowly it is rebuilt?
  2. Haruto makes himself useful to men who never ask where he came from. What does that usefulness cost him, and what does it protect?
  3. Suzu keeps count inside a compound she cannot leave. Where does the novel treat waiting as a form of action?
  4. Kenshin grows up inside the household that exiled his father. What does he inherit that nobody intended to give him?
  5. Each coast changes the terms, Japan, the Maghreb, the Indian Ocean. Which one changes Haruto most, and why?
  6. The title means under the same sky. Who is the promise made to, and what does the novel finally decide it is worth?
